3…2…1… BLAST OFF! Get ready to explore outer space with this Crochet Astronaut Helmet! A perfect prop for your kids dress-up trunk. Made with Bernat Blanket Yarn, this pattern works up extremely quickly and couldn’t be easier. I made it in a “one size fits all” format. Although you could add on more rounds to make bigger.
Materials:
- Yarnspirations Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn in white. I used two skein of white (see HERE).
- Worsted weight yarn in gray. I used Bernat Super Value in Soft Gray (and a bit of red and blue for the embellishments)
- Size K crochet hook
- Large tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring
DC = Double Crochet
Astronaut Helmet Pattern:
With Bernat Blanket Yarn in white
Magic ring, chain 2 and make 15 DC in ring, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (30 DC)
Round 3: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, join, chain 2 (45 DC)
Round 4-6: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (45 DC)
Row 7: DC in first 30 stitches, leave remaining stitches unworked, chain 2, turn (30 DC)
Row 8-10: DC in each of the 30 DC stitch from previous row, chain 2, turn (30 DC)
at the end of row 10 chain 15 and join to beginning of row 10. Now we are going to work in rounds instead of rows.
Round 11: DC in each stitch around (making a DC in each of the chain stitches), join, chain 2 (45 DC)
Round 12: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (45 DC)
Round 13: Slip stitch in each stitch around, join, fasten off and weave in ends.
With two strands of gray worsted weight yarn, join to edge of face opening. SC in each stitch around. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Add embellishments like “USA” or “NASA” by making chains of 10-15 and sewing them on in letters. Blue circles are just a magic with 10 SC in it.
My 5-year-old was asking me a lot of questions about aliens yesterday and insisted we needed to ask the astronauts some questions. So big brother helped him write a note to the astronauts Now I need to figure out how to get this to NASA!
“Dear Astronauts,
My brother Chase wants to know if there are aliens in outer space? He also wants to know if aliens are real? He wants to know how they look like? We love astronauts!
From Micah (age 7) and Chase (age 5)”
One size fits all! Same helmet on all of us!
