We are already halfway through our Under the Sea CAL! Square number six is the Pufferfish (aka Blowfish) with it’s big round puffed-up body and adorably soft “spikes.”

I’m using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors Saffron, Pale Yellow, and Carrot Orange. Of course you can choose any color you’d like for your pufferfish! You can shop all shades of Red Heart Yarn HERE on Yarnspirations.com.

Be sure to check out these adorable matching Under the Sea Polymer Clay Hooks by Jennifer from Day by Day Clay and Crochet! She is selling them HERE in her FACEBOOK GROUP. I just received the jellyfish and crab hook and I’m obsessed with it! The octopus and pufferfish hook just went up for sale and it’s so cute!

Pufferfish Pattern:

Fish Body:
Using two colors – Red Heart Super Saver in Saffron and Bright Yellow
Starting with Saffron, Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 6 DC in ring, join in bright yellow and make another 6 DC in ring, do not fasten either color off, join to first DC with saffron, chain 2.
Continue to DC in rounds alternating both colors so half of your fish is in saffron and other half is in bright yellow. (12 DC)
Round 2: starting with saffron, 2 DC in first 6 stitches, 2 DC in remaining stitches with bright yellow, join with saffron, chain 2 (24 DC)
Round 3: starting with saffron, 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, (6x), now with bright yellow, 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next (6x), join to first DC with saffron, chain 2 (36 DC)
Round 4: starting with saffron, 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next (9x), now with bright yellow, 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next (9x), join to first DC with saffron, chain 2 (54 DC)
Round 5: starting with saffron, 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next two (9x), now with bright yellow, 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 2 (9x), join to first DC with saffron, continue with spikes pattern below (72 DC)
Or you can fasten off and use pattern as is without the spikes.

Spikes (optional): chain 3 and slip stitch to join to same stitch, slip stitch in next 3 stitches, chain 3 and slip stitch to same stitch, continue around the body, switching colors when you get to the light yellow.
To make Spikes on the inside of the body, slip stitch over so you are working your hook along the lines created between rounds. Continue the same pattern of chain 3 and slip stitch over 3 stitches. Make as many spikes as you want along the inside of the body.
Tip: keep the area that you want to stitch on the eyes/mouth and one of the fins clear of spikes.

Eyes and mouth: with a strand of black yarn and your tapestry needle, created three little half circles for sleepy closed eyes and smiling mouth.

Fish Fins (make 4):
with carrot orange yarn
Chain 9, SC in second chain from hook and rest of way down. Chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in first 7 stitches, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (7 SC)
Row 4: SC in first 5, ch 1, turn
Row 5: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (5 SC)
SC along sides and starting chain of wing (not along ridges).
Fasten off leaving tail.

One fin goes on center of body, another under the fish on the left side, and place the last two fins together for the back tail on the right side of fish body. You can flip the fins over. They are reversible.

Stitch one fin down to the front of body in the middle, tilted a bit upward. Then lay the back tail fin under the body and the front fin under the body as well. Now you can stitch down the body, working a strand of yarn and your tapestry needle along the inner edge and through the fins and attach to your bubble square.

Remember that the backside can be messy! Nobody will see it!

It’s never too late to dive into the Under the Sea CAL!
