Crochet Fruit Basket Blanket

The fruit blanket is finished! This has been a fun little crochet project as we head into summer!

I posted all the corner-to-corner fruits as separate patterns so you can use them individually for many different projects! Create pocket pouches, crossbody purses, pillows, or make more fruits and crochet a larger blanket!

In this post I will show you how to join the squares and create the border. I thought the basketweave border would be perfect for our Fruit Basket Blanket! Finished size is approximately 34 x 38 but you could continue the border to make it bigger.

To make this project even sweeter, I have teamed up with Red Heart to bring you a curated a box of Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in all the colors you need to make this Fruit Blanket! Or just stock up on this perfect array of rainbow colors. Limited quantities available!

Once you have the c2c fruit squares finished, you will want to lay them out and join them.
I had just enough of the soft white left to join the squares….
I did have a little math miscalculation and realized that even though the pixel graph heigh and widths added up correctly, I wasn’t taking into account that the watermelon touches multiple fruit squares.

So there are a couple ways to solve this. I ended up making a few filler C2C pieces BUT then as I was joining, I noticed I probably didn’t even need those fillers. Crochet is very forgiving and I could have just stretched the squares a bit as I joined.

In addition, fellow crocheter April shared with me that she just rearranged the fruit a little bit and they all lined up nicely! I also love the borders she added to each piece.

Now let’s use my favorite joining technique: The Slip Stitch Join to connect these C2C pieces together!
HERE is a video on how to do the Slip Stitch Join
but I also go over it in the first part one of the Fruit Blanket Video Tutorial below:

To start the border, join in your red (or any color of your choice) yarn at any space between the c2c pixel squares, chain 1 and make a SC, now chain 2 and make a SC in the next space, continue around making a SC + chain 2 + SC in the four corners.

Join to first SC and slip stitch over to the first chain space.
Make 2 HDC in each chain space all the way around, make a HDC + chain 2 + HDC in each corner.

Continue to HDC around switching colors every row for as many rows as you’d like.

Now let’s start the basketweave border!
With brown yarn, DC in each stitch around making a DC + chain 2 + DC in each corner, join to first DC, chain 2.

Front Post DC in first stitch, Back Post DC in next, repeat around alternating between Front Post and Back Post Double Crochets. DC + chain 2 + DC in each of the corners. Join to first DC.

Now make a Back Post DC in the first stitch and a Front Post DC in the next, alternate as you repeat around, DC + chain 2 + DC in the corners.

Continue alternating for two more rounds, fasten off and weave in ends.

Now you have a beautiful basketweave border for our Fruit Basket Blanket!
So bright and beautiful and sweet for the summer.

This blanket is reversible! The backside is a mirror image of the front!
