My last blog post showed a quick little crochet snowflake pattern and now I will show you how to alter that snowflake slightly and transform it into a granny square! Make an afghan entirely of snowflakes or use them as filler squares for a winter themed blanket. They would also go together perfectly with my Crochet Snowman Square!
Materials:
– Worsted Weight Yarn in white and blue. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Aqua.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
Finished square is approx 8 x 8 inches.
Snowflake Square Pattern:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring, join
Round 2: chain 3 + DC in the first stitch, *DC + chain 1 + DC in next, repeat from * around, join to second chain in chain 3.
Round 3: slip stitch over to chain space, chain 2 + HDC in space, chain 3, *HDC + chain 1+ HDC in next chain space, chain 3, repeat from * around, join to top of chain 2.
Round 4: slip stitch into to chain 1 space, *chain 4 and slip stitch to join back into same space you started, chain 6, slip stitch into next HDC chain space, repeat from * around, join
Round 5: slip stitch into chain 4 space, *chain 2+ DC + chain 1 + DC + chain 2 and slip stitch to join back to chain 4 space, chain 2, slip stitch to join to middle of chain 6 space, chain 2 and join with slip stitch to next chain 4 space, repeat from * around. Join, fasten off and weave in ends.
Continue with blue yarn.
Round 6: Starting in the chain 2 space right before the snowflake “point” you just joined to (see picture below), chain 2 + DC in the chain 2 space, *SC +chain 1 + SC in the top of the DC stitches in snowflake point, 2 DC in chain 2 space, chain 1, 2 DC in next chain 2 space, repeat around from *, join to top of chain 2, chain 1
Round 7: SC in first 3 stitches, HDC in chain 1 space, DC in next 3 stitch, *chain 3 and skip over chain 1 space from previous row, DC in the next 3 stitches, HDC in chain 1 space, SC in next 3 stitches, SC over chain 1 space, SC in next 3 stitches, HDC over chain 1 space, DC in next 3, repeat from * until end… you should end with a SC over the chain 1 space because you are ending in the middle of the top edge of your snowflake, join, chain 1
Round 8: SC in each stitch around making 2 SC + chain 1 + 2 SC over each of the corner chains, join, fasten off and weave in ends.
Block if needed. HERE is a tutorial on how to block your square. My photos show an unblocked square.
