Crochet Elf Hat Pattern

Get the whole family in a festive mood with crochet Elf Hats for all! The hat works in DC rounds so you can easily change colors to make stripes. A perfect prop for your holiday photos!

Materials:
– Worsted Weight Yarn in green and red. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Kelly Green and Scarlett Red.
–  Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Pom-pom maker (optional)

SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet
BPDC = Back Post Double Crochet

NOTE: ALL HATS START THE SAME WAY. You will begin with the long hat tail. IF you want the tail shorter/longer you can decrease/increase the amount of continuous rows. For instance if you want the tail shorter you would DC in each stitch around for rows 7-8 instead of 7-10 (and so on) and if you wanted the tail longer you DC in each stitch around for rows 7-12 instead of 7-10 (and so on). Just for reference, the current tail is great length on my 2-year-old, 4-year-old and also myself!

With green yarn
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 6 DC in ring, pull tight, join, chain 2
Round 2-5: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (6 DC)
Round 6: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2 (9 DC)
Round 7-10: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (9 DC)
Round 11: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 2 (12 DC)
Round 12-15: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (12 DC)
Round 16: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 2 (15 DC)
Round 17-20: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (15 DC)
Round 21: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 4, repeat around, join, chai 2 (18 DC)
Round 22-25: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (18 DC)
Continue with pattern below, following the size you need.

Size: 0-3 months
Round 26: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, Repeat around, join, chain 2 (27 DC)
Round 27: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 2, Repeat around, join, chain 2 (36 DC)
Round 28: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 3, Repeat around, join, chain 2 (45 DC)
Round 29 -32: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (45 DC)
Change to red yarn
Round 33: SC in each stitch around, join chain 2
Round 34-35: FPDC in first stitch, BPDC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (45)
Fasten off weave in ends.

Round 26: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, Repeat around, join, chain 2 (27 DC)
Round 27: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 2, Repeat around, join, chain 2 (36 DC)
