Surface Slip Stitch Crochet Pillow

If you have never heard of the surface slip stitch you are in for a treat! It is such an easy way to pretty up a crochet project! Surface Slip Stitching is a method where you use the basic slip stitch to make designs or lettering onto the surface of your crochet project. Like in this project I wrote the name Ella (she is Zoe’s friend!) on the front panel of this crochet pillow. I have used this technique on blankets (like THIS ONE ), and on granny squares (like THIS ONE). So much you can do with this simple technique!

Materials to make the pillow:
– Bernat Super Value in Bright Teal (one skein)
– Bernat Super Value in Magenta (one skein)
– Size H crochet hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Poly-fil Fiber Stuffing
– Pom-Pom Maker (optional)

Finished Size: 18 inches long x 10 inches tall

Pillow Panels (make 2):
with blue yarn
Chain 41, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-80: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn.
Fasten off after row 80, weave in ends.

On one of the panels begin to surface slip stitch. I find it easiest to surface slip stitch on a project made up of single crochets like this one. Because of the small stitches you have lots of places to insert your hook and lots of rows/stripes to use as guides.

Here is a short video on surface slip stitching. After about 40 seconds there isn’t audio because I was busy concentrating on the stitches and my dog was barking in the background. Video was mostly meant to be a visual!

You can surface slip stitch in straight rows (easiest) or try your hand at making a name like I did! Experiment and see what you can do!

When you are finished slip stitching on one of the pillow panels you will SC the two panels together with the blue yarn. Make a SC + chain 1 + SC in each corner. Be sure to stuff with poly-fil before closing up. Then add pom-poms to the four corners!
