Chunky Bunny Crochet Hat

It’s basically spring but I know a lot of you are still have heavy winter weather. This chunky bunny crochet hat will keep those heads warm! Made with Bernat Softee Chunky yarn that is soft and makes the hat a quick one to work up. But the best part of all is that the chunky yarn allows for the ears to stand up without any other support on the inside!

And how about those super sweet fabric ears?! Those were made by poking holes in fleece fabric and crocheting around the edges. You can choose ANY color or print of fleece fabric to change up the look of the hat!

I used a Skip Stitch Blade to poke holes around the fleece fabric. You can purchase a skip stitch blade and rotary cutter on slipstitch.com but for a detailed tutorial on how to use the skip stitch blade to cute fabric see THIS POST.

Materials:
– Size H Crochet Hook
Bernat Softee Chunky yarn in Clay. Shop all colors at Yarnspirations.com
– Fleece Fabric (1/2 yard is more than enough!) I purchase the pink polkadots at JoAnn Fabrics.
– Skip Stitch Blade Original #1 <<<< purchase here.
– 45mm Fiskars Rotary Cutter
– Tapestry Needle

SkipStitch

Basic Hat:
Note: I made Front Post Single Crochet (FPSC) and Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC) stitches on the bottom of my hat. In hindsight, this wasn’t such a great idea. It causes the rim to be very tight/stiff. I suggest finishing the whole hat in basic DC stitches as written below. If you do like the look of the ribbed band on the bottom edge of the hat, forgo the last 2 rows stitches in each size and finish with 4 rounds of FPSC and BPSC alternating.

You will use one of the ears as your template to trace an ear piece in the fabric

Cut it out and use it as your template to cut out a second fabric ear!
BunnyTut2
Fabric ear should be smaller than crocheted ear.

Use your skip stitch blade to cut holes along the edge of your ear. You will want to twist your blade and fabric to go around the curve. It’s ok to pick your blade up mid-cut. Just be sure to line up the blade with the last hole made when you place it back down. Keep in mind that YOU decide which holes to crochet in so if there is an extra hole, it’s typically no big deal.

SC + chain in each hole around the fabric ear.

BunnyTut6
Stitch the crocheted ear and fabric ear together with a tapestry needle. No need to stuff them! The Bernat Softee Chunky yarn makes these are thick and sturdy!
BunnyTut7
Sew both ears on the top of the hat!

At this point you can stop and enjoy your bunny hat! OR embellish it with a flower crown!
I used a bit of Bernat Super Value worsted weight yarn and size H crochet hook.
BunnyHat2
Sew them on to the top of the hat in front of the ears. You shouldn’t need more than 3 or 4 flowers.

Hoppy Easter!
